Features and Overview:

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visas are designed to provide temporary residency to migrants willing to work in an industry where there’s an identifiable skill shortage in Australia. Since 18 March 2018, the TSS visa has replaced the 457 visa. There are three streams; short-term, medium-term and the labour agreement stream. Temporary working visas like the TSS (subclass 482) visa are a great way to earn money and experience Australia before applying for a permanent residency visa at a later date.

If a business cannot find an Australian for a position, they may sponsor you to obtain this visa. You can be in or outside of Australiawhen you lodge your application.

The steps for getting a TSS are:

  • Employer applies to be a sponsor
  • Employer is approved to be a sponsor
  • Employer nominates you for a skilled position
  • Employee applies for the visa
  • Visa outcome

Steps need to be done in order, but you don’t need to wait until one step is finished before moving to the next.

Eligibility:

There are three visa streams for the TSS (subclass 482) visa: medium-term, short-term and the labour agreement stream.

Medium Term Visas

  • Your occupation must be on the medium-term occupation list
  • Have English proficiency (no skill scored below 5 on the IELTS test)
  • Employer tests the Australian labour market before an application
  • Employer pays the Australian market salary for your role
  • Two years relevant work experience required

There is no age limit for this visa. After three years, you may apply for a permanent residency visa. This temporary visa can be extended indefinitely if all conditions are still met at the end of your initial period.

Short-Term TSS Visa (482)

  • Your occupation must be on the short-term occupation list
  • Have English proficiency (no skill scored below 4.5 on the IELTS test)
  • Employer tests the Australian labour market before an application
  • Employer pays the Australian market salary for your role
  • You must show intention of temporary stay
  • Two years relevant work experience required

There is no age limit for this visa. You may apply for an extension once for a maximum of 4 years stay (2+2). This visa does not allow you to apply for permanent residency at a later date, even if you applied for an extension to your temporary visa.

Training requirement:

Employers sponsoring TSS (subclass 482) visas must pay a training contribution charge. Businesses earning less than $10 million per year will be required to make an annual $1,200 payment for each employee on a TSS 482 visa. Businesses with turnover of $10 million or more per year will be required to make an annual payment of $1,800.

Cost:

The base application fee for this visa is $1,175, plus additional fees if you have dependent family members included in your application. Further fees for things like medical exams and police checks are necessary and will vary depending on where you live.

Is this visa right for me?

This visa suits skilled applicants looking to find work in Australia. It requires co-operation between the prospective employee migrant and employer. The field you work in must be in an area where there’s an identifiable skill shortage in Australia. By selecting a job on the medium-term occupation list, this visa is a fantastic choice for migrants who’d like to eventually apply for permanent residency at a later date.
